The National Plant Monitoring Scheme (NPMS) is looking for a volunteer to help enable plant surveys across Northern Ireland by supporting access permissions for survey squares.

Many NPMS survey locations fall on privately owned land, and access is only possible with the agreement of landowners. By helping us identify and contact landowners, you will play an important role in ensuring that volunteers can carry out plant surveys and that we collect the data needed to understand how wild plants are changing across the countryside.

This is a home-based volunteer role ideal for someone who enjoys research, organisation and communicating with people, and who wants to support conservation behind the scenes.

About the National Plant Monitoring Scheme

The National Plant Monitoring Scheme (NPMS) is a UK-wide citizen science project that invites volunteers to record wild plants and the habitats they grow in. The data collected helps track how plant diversity and abundance are changing across the countryside and fills an important gap in how we monitor the health of the UK’s natural environment.

The scheme is run in partnership by the Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland (BSBI), Plantlife, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH).

The BSBI supports people of all experience levels to learn about, enjoy and record wild plants through training, field meetings and a friendly network of volunteers.

Plantlife is an international conservation charity dedicated to protecting and restoring wild plants and fungi, managing nature reserves, and inspiring people to connect with the plant life that underpins our world.

About the role

The Northern Ireland NPMS Access Permissions Volunteer will support the success of plant monitoring across Northern Ireland by helping secure permission for surveyors to access land.

You will research land ownership, gather contact details for landowners or land managers, and contact them to request permission for volunteers to carry out plant surveys.

Your work will help:

  • Increase the number of survey squares that can be monitored.
  • Reduce barriers for field volunteers.
  • Improve the quality and coverage of plant monitoring data in Northern Ireland.

This role plays a valuable supporting part in a national citizen science project that contributes to understanding and conserving plant populations.
