About PTES

PTES funds conservation efforts and research in the UK and globally, working with scientists, conservationists, landowners, and the public. Since 1998, we have run the Great Stag Hunt survey, collecting records of stag beetles (Lucanus cervus) across England and Wales submitted by the public. Data from the survey have been used to assess changes in the stag beetle population over time and continue to inform conservation efforts.

About the role

We are looking for a volunteer to support the day-to-day running of the Great Stag Hunt through the summer and autumn. Key activities are:

  1. verifying records by identifying images of stag beetles from those of similar species;
  2. responding to enquiries and directing questions to PTES where necessary; and
  3. creating digital content around stag beetle conservation.

Benefits

You will:

  1. have the support of a dedicated project officer;
  2. gain experience and skills in entomological identification; working with the public; and digital content creation;
  3. learn about citizen science and conservation activities more widely.

About you

No particular experience is necessary, but you should have an enthusiasm for the natural world and conservation and, ideally, an inordinate fondness for beetles (or at least, a curiosity about insects). Good communication skills are desirable.

A laptop or PC and access to an internet connection at home are necessary.

Time commitment

This is an ongoing and flexible role between 1-2 days per week in total across any days of the week.

Expenses

For full days in the office, volunteers will be reimbursed travel expenses up to the sum of £15 per day. To claim expenses, supporting receipts must be provided and there must have been agreement to the work provided with the project officer.
