Help us build the digital roots for urban nature – IT & Digital Trustee needed! 🦋

Location: Remote / London (Hackney focus)
Role Type: Volunteer Trustee (approx. 4–8 hours per month)

About Natural Neighbours:

We work with inner-city communities to create vibrant, nature-friendly neighbourhoods where wildlife flourishes alongside people.

We build "Natural Neighbourhoods" by creating habitat hotspots in schools, estates, and community spaces. We empower local residents - our Natural Champions - to lead the recovery of urban nature.

We are at an exciting tipping point. Having proven our model in Hackney, we are now preparing to scale. To do this safely and sustainably, we need a "Canopy" of strong Trustee governance to oversee our digital evolution and data-driven impact.

The Role:

We are looking for an IT or Digital professional to join our Board of Trustees. Reporting into our Chair of Trustees, you will be the strategic lead for our digital infrastructure, ensuring our technology - including our habitat-mapping app - is robust, secure, and ready to scale.

What you’ll do:

  • Shape the Digital Roadmap: Lead the development of a technology strategy that supports our mission and national scaling.
  • App & Data Oversight: Provide expert guidance on our habitat-mapping app and ensure our ecological data collection is world-class.
  • Strengthen Governance: Oversee data protection (GDPR) and cyber security, ensuring the safety of our community, including our young Natural Champions.
  • Systems Advice: Help us select the best tools (CRM, project management, collaborative software) to empower our delivery teams.
  • Strategic Governance: Participate in quarterly Board meetings to ensure our digital assets align with our Theory of Change.

Who you are:

  • A professional with experience in IT management, software development, digital transformation, or data science.
  • A strategic thinker who can see how technology can amplify social and environmental impact.
  • Someone who can translate complex technical concepts for a non-technical audience.
  • Passionate about social equity and the role technology plays in democratising access to nature.

Why join us?

This is a unique opportunity to apply your technical skills to one of the most pressing challenges of our time: urban nature recovery. You will join a diverse board of experts and play a pivotal role in transitioning a successful local pilot into a data-led national movement.

About Natural Neighbours

Natural Neighbours has a positive, forward-looking vision of towns, cities and neighbourhoods where wildlife flourishes alongside people. We recognise the basic human need to connect: with each other, with nature, and with ourselves. Research shows local activities that nurture wildlife help to build a valuable sense of community connection and wellbeing. Additionally, areas such as balconies, patios and window boxes have potential to bring the health-giving benefits of nature to neighbourhoods. Natural Neighbours is fusing these two concepts by bringing people together to nurture wildlife, using even the smallest of spaces to help nature thrive.
