HR/Operations Trustee
Natural Neighbours
Headline: Help us scale urban nature recovery – HR & Operations Trustee needed! 🌿
Location: Remote / London (Hackney focus)
Role Type: Volunteer Trustee (approx. 4-8 hours per month)
About Natural Neighbours
We work with inner-city communities to create vibrant, nature-friendly neighbourhoods where wildlife flourishes alongside people. We build "Natural Neighbourhoods" by creating habitat hotspots in schools, estates, and community spaces. We empower local residents - our Natural Champions - to lead the recovery of urban nature.
We are at an exciting tipping point. Having proven our model in Hackney, we are now preparing to scale. To do this safely and sustainably, we need a "Canopy" of strong Trustee governance.
The Role
We are looking for an HR or Operations professional to join our Board of Trustees. Reporting into our Chair of Trustees, you will be the strategic lead for our people and systems infrastructure. This isn't about filing paperwork; it’s about helping us build an inclusive, robust organisation able to support a growing team of staff and volunteers.
What you’ll do:
- Shape our Culture: Advise on building a diverse, inclusive team that reflects the communities we work in.
- Strengthen our Roots: Oversee the development of essential policies (Safeguarding, HR, Health & Safety).
- Scale our Impact: Help the Director transition the charity from a local pilot to a multi-site operation. Including leading on the recruitment, management and reward strategies for new volunteers and staff.
- Provide Governance: Attend quarterly board meetings and offer ad-hoc expert advice to the leadership team.
- To lead on the health and wellbeing aspect of Natural Neighbours operations
Who you are:
- You have a background in HR, People Ops, or General Operations (Private, Public, or Charity sector).
- You are passionate about social equity, nature recovery, mental wellbeing and the environment.
- You enjoy strategic thinking and are comfortable "building the plane while flying it" in a growing charity environment.
Why join us?
You will play a pivotal role in a "virtuous spiral" of change - where nature recovery leads to better mental health, stronger communities, and a more resilient urban environment. You’ll work with a passionate, expert board and directly influence the future of urban rewilding in the UK.
About Natural Neighbours
Natural Neighbours has a positive, forward-looking vision of towns, cities and neighbourhoods where wildlife flourishes alongside people.
We recognise the basic human need to connect: with each other, with nature, and with ourselves.
Research shows local activities that nurture wildlife help to build a valuable sense of community connection and wellbeing. Additionally, areas such as balconies, patios and window boxes have potential to bring the health-giving benefits of nature to neighbourhoods.
Natural Neighbours is fusing these two concepts by bringing people together to nurture wildlife, using even the smallest of spaces to help nature thrive.
