Lead Habitat Surveyor, Knepp
Operation Wallacea
Operation Wallacea is a conservation research organisation working across a range of countries and ecosystems worldwide, who design and implement biodiversity and conservation management research programmes.
We are currently recruiting for a volunteer Lead Habitat Surveyor to work at our UK site based at the Knepp Estate in West Sussex. Positions will ideally be for 3 weeks or more, on dates between 14th June and 8th August, excluding 12th – 18th July. You can find more information on our website.
The position will involve carrying out surveys as part of a large-scale monitoring programme across the rewilding site. Applicants should have extensive field survey experience, including plant ID skills, the use of the Defra metric and UKHab, and a good understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain. You will be working as part of a larger staff team to deliver field courses to people looking to get a head start in ecology and conservation, so any previous teaching experience is valuable.
In return, successful applicants receive full accommodation and food on-site, potential current and future research opportunities, the chance to take part in at least one safari around the Knepp Estate, networking and skills development and of course, the opportunity to contribute towards long-term conservation efforts.
The position will be filled when we find a suitable candidate, so if you are interested, please apply as soon as you can to give yourself the best chance. The position involves working with minors, so if successful, you will be asked to complete a background check.
About Operation Wallacea Ltd
Operation Wallacea (Opwall) began working within the Wallacea region of Indonesia in 1995. Initially funded to run a rapid assessment of this poorly-explored area, we soon discovered that the need for long term monitoring data in many ecosystems was critical.
Nearly 30 years on, we now run biodiversity research expeditions all over the world, sourcing data that has underpinned hundreds of research papers and informed high-level environmental policy decisions in the sites we work in. We also offer biodiversity and conservation field training courses in the UK as well as online training courses using data collected on our expeditions.
