Mid November 2026 - end of February 2027. With 2 week break over Christmas and possible extension into March 2027.

You will be asked to assist with a range of tasks on Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve, and in the Grounds of the Field Centre, which may include:

  • Clearing vegetation with hand tools
  • Strimming and hedge trimming (in house training will be provided)
  • Constructing or maintenance of paths, steps, rails or platforms
  • Invasive species removal (by hand only)
  • Scrub clearance and coppicing
  • Tree planting and habitat creation
  • Monitoring
  • Tool and machinery maintenance
  • Working with volunteers
  • Community engagement and events

Ideally you will need to be physically fit and happy to work out in all weathers. Some experience of using hand tools would be helpful.

Subject to successful completion of DBS.

This voluntary role offers the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in practical conservation and nature reserve management. This is a stepping stone for those seeking a career in conservation.

There will be opportunity to learn from experienced staff and volunteers, and in house training where appropriate. There may also be the opportunity for some external certificated training.

There will be the opportunity to take on and carry out your own project with the support of the NNR team.

A room in shared accommodation and access to a shared kitchen will be provided for the duration of the volunteer placement. Another benefit of volunteering is the fabulous cake that is always on offer.

Please note that public transport is limited due to the centre’s remote location, so access to your own vehicle would be advantageous.

In relation to employment legislation you will be considered a ‘voluntary’ worker, and as such the role is unpaid. However, you will be reimbursed for any reasonable expenses that you necessarily incur in the carrying out of your voluntary role. Uniform is provided by the Field Studies Council
