Community Engagement Lead (Volunteer)
Women's Fund for Nature
Policy & CampaigningConservation & WildlifeCarbon, Climate & Energy
Women’s Fund for Nature is an exciting new initiative that invites women to come together, pool their resources, and support youth-led responses to the crises facing nature, the climate, and the environment in the UK. We challenge the notion that real change is beyond our control and that philanthropy is only for the very wealthy.
Over the past year, we’ve built a team of extraordinary trustees and volunteers who are deeply committed to the mission of the Fund. Together we’ve been working towards the launch of the Fund in October 2026. Each volunteer contributes specialist skills and experience in finance, communications, community building, operations, and technology. We’re now looking for a generalist to help manage the growing member community when the Fund opens.
This volunteer will serve as the contact point for the Fund and must therefore have excellent communications and organizational skills, some technological know-how to ensure that the member portal and other forms of online engagement work smoothly, and the time to respond to the general enquiries and expectations of the members.
If you’re inspired by the idea of becoming an invaluable member of a team building something from scratch, and curious about the potential of pooled giving as a conduit for transformational change, then we’d love to hear from you.
Role Description
This position will be vital in helping the Fund to steward and sustain the member community. Responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the virtual member community, the volunteer will respond to member enquiries, manage the members’ learning and volunteer experience and work with the team to grow the Fund by helping to create an inspiring experience for its members. Specifically, the volunteer will:
- Support the Founder in the design of the membership experience; testing and establishing ways to keep the members engaged with the Fund and the member community.
- Manage the day-to-day implementation of the membership experience, organising regular community calls, monitoring and posting stories and announcements that will be of interest to our members, setting up WhatsApp and slack groups for members, and facilitating the online voting system.
- Manage the maintenance of the members portal. This will entail day-to-day tasks such as uploading resources, responding to questions from members, and troubleshooting technical issues when necessary. There will also be periodic tasks such as managing the voting system when grant cycles are live and updating grantee details.
- Work closely with the operations and finance volunteers to ensure that systems designed to track member data are efficiently and securely used and that data can be used to determine member growth, retention rates, changes in subscriptions rates etc.
- Help the Founder to design and launch a program of volunteer opportunities for the members such as establishing grant review panels and grantee mentorship.
- Work closely with the Founder, volunteers and trustees to identify guest speakers and create a speaker series.
Person Specification
Our ideal candidate is someone who can be adaptable and willing to apply their skills and interests to a variety of tasks as the Fund grows. Specifically, we are looking for someone who is:
- Keenly interested in climate and nature issues, supportive of our mission and values and invested in the idea that anyone can be a philanthropist!
- Excited by the idea of helping a brand-new organisation get off the ground. Many of the tasks you will be responsible for will be identified by you. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable working across a variety of functions, creative and forward thinking, who’s willing to test out ideas, troubleshoot when things go wrong, and open to feedback and suggestions from the team and the Fund’s members.
- Adept at organising; setting up and maintaining new systems, and comfortable with managing data.
- Comfortable with technology including Squarespace, virtual meeting software, google forms, and social media platforms. We're looking for someone savvy in tech and online community management tools - or who can learn those ropes quickly - supporting our community in various virtual spaces.
- An excellent communicator who’s happy to talk to new audiences, communicate with groups, and get to know people on an individual basis.
- Comfortable working remotely and independently
- Able to devote at least two hours/day (or equivalent) to this role over the coming year. Once the Fund is open, we imagine there will be a constant stream of member enquiries. There may be some initial glitches in the members portal. We will need to keep the members engaged before the first grant cycle. All of this will take time and we’re looking for someone who is available and responsive on a consistent basis.
If the time commitment is too much for one person, we can also look at the possibility of sharing the role across multiple people.
What Women’s Fund for Nature can offer you
The team at Women’s Fund for Nature are all currently unpaid volunteers. We hope one day to be able to offer remuneration to our team but until then, we strive to provide all our volunteers with a positive and enriching experience whilst working with us. As part of the team, you will receive:
- A comprehensive induction to Women’s Fund for Nature and your role
- Reimbursement for all reasonable expenses you incur whilst volunteering, including travel to and from any in-person meetings you attend.
- Flexible hours that can fit around your other commitments. You decide when and where to work.
- The opportunity to be involved in building and shaping a new charity from the ground up! This comes with many chances for professional development and networking in the climate and philanthropy spaces.
- An invitation to be part of an exciting new community. You’ll be part of a team that is really excited about the mission of the Fund, a rapidly growing community of engaged members, and a movement that supports the most exciting and energetic responses to the climate crises in the UK.
Please join us!
Please also note that this role is not just open to women! The Fund’s members are people who identify as women, but its grantees, advisors, and the members of its team need not be.
